Meet the Cohort

These inaugural Journalism for All schools will receive three years of comprehensive support to build and sustain journalism programs.

Our Journalism for All initiative has selected 30 public schools across New York City’s five boroughs for its inaugural cohort.

The cohort reflects the initiative’s commitment to equity. On average, about 84% of students in these schools face economic hardship as defined by the NYC Department of Education, and six schools report rates above 95%. The cohort includes three transfer schools, four schools with bilingual education programs, and six schools with specialized programs for students with disabilities.

Voices from the cohort

Voices from the cohort ⋆

“Today marks the beginning of countless stories waiting to be told by voices that deserve to be heard. With these new resources, we're not just starting a journalism program – we're empowering students to become seekers of truth, champions of facts and storytellers for their community.”

– Jason Meilands, Teacher at Lyons Community School

“As a journalism adviser, I am beyond thrilled to be a part of such an ambitious initiative. Restoring and revitalizing student journalism in New York City is one of the greatest educational investments we can make for the current and future generations.”

Michael Inoa, Teacher at John Dewey High School

“I am deeply grateful to Journalism For All for recognizing the potential within our students and for offering them this life-changing opportunity. This is not just about learning journalism; it’s about empowering our students, amplifying their voices and giving them the tools they need to succeed in the workforce.”
