Welcome to the third edition of our monthly newsletter, The Inkling! Keep reading for updates from the NYC Youth Journalism Coalition, including recent highlights, opportunities and recommended viewing.
🔥 Gaining Momentum
YJC’s Student Journalist Affinity Group has selected four new student leaders! Fredlove, Liza, Derry, and Katelynn will help focus and drive YJC’s advocacy efforts this spring, and lend an important student voice in strategic conversations.
At our December meeting, the YJC got to learn from Michael Hill, host of Morning Edition at WNYC! Coalition members heard about his background in journalism, a day in his life as a radio host, and his advice for the next generation. More than 20 student attendees joined.
Michael Hill on using silence as your secrete interview weapon: “When the person has stopped talking, and I want more from them, I just make eye contact. … I don’t say anything else, I just keep looking at them. And eventually they start talking.”
🗞 Coalition Updates
Our next coalition meeting is Wednesday, January 17, from 6-7pm EST on Zoom.
We’ll hear from PBS Student Reporting Labs, introduce the new SJAG student leaders, and review our spring roadmap. Please bring your member updates as well!

The Democracy Group Podcasting Fellowship12-week remote program for all teens who want to start a podcast and build an audience to strengthen democracy, engaging diverse viewpoints, and bridging political divides. Applications open January 16 and the deadline is February 12.
